Household Tip: Hunting for a Humidifier?

Winter brings with it dry indoor air, especially in colder climes when the necessity of long-term indoor heating is a seasonal reality. If you find that the dry air results in dry skin, a scratchy throat and maybe even nosebleeds, you may want to invest in a room humidifier. Here are a couple of points to keep in mind before choosing between a cool-mist humidifier and a hot steam one:

  • Cool-mist humidifiers emit cool air, but because the water is never heated, there is more risk of bacteria growth, resulting in bacteria spores circulating in the air. This can create a risk for people with breathing issues.

  • Hot steam humidifiers, or vaporizers, send warm mist into the air. The water heats to a boil so while that would kill off any mold or bacteria growing in the water, the hot water does create a burn risk. As such, extra caution should be exercised when placing a hot steam humidifier in a child's room.
