Hear Here

The holidays are over, all the out-of-town guests have left and it's finally time to put your feet up and enjoy a quiet start to the new year. But wait a minute, what's all that noise?

With family members cocooning more at this time of year, you're probably noticing just how noisy it can be to have everyone under the same roof for extended periods of time. Here are some suggestions to muffle some of the noise and allow everyone quiet respite in the great indoors.

  • Insulate ceilings and behind walls. This is a big project, but also the most effective in keeping unwanted noise out.

  • If you're not prepared to endure the mess and expense of an insulation project, consider installing acoustic ceiling panels, wall foams and acoustic floorboards.

  • Carpet floors. Muffle the echo of footsteps on your bare floors by laying down carpeting, or at least a few well-placed rugs.

  • Check your doors. Most interior doors are hollow — replacing them with a solid-wood door or a particleboard-core/composite-core door would provide more effective sound barriers.

  • Add curtains, fabric paintings, even well-stocked bookshelves to help absorb sound.

  • Use sound-absorbing paints. Yes, it's a thing! Some companies make paints that claim to reduce noise by up to 30 percent.

  • Invest in a white sound machine. You may choose to fight noise with noise, in this case a white noise machine that can be placed in your bedroom or home office to mask surrounding sounds.
